The first self-service, interactive kiosk was developed in 1977 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was designed to provide campus information.
Reportedly 30,000 individuals used the kiosk in the first six weeks. The first successful network of interactive kiosks used for commercial purposes was a project developed by the shoe retailer Florsheim Shoe Co.
The system was installed in 1985 and consisted of over 600 kiosks. Just six years later, in 1991, the first commercial kiosk with internet connection was displayed at Comdex.
In 1997, KioskCom was launched to provide a tradeshow venue for organizations looking to deploy interactive self-service kiosks. This organization continues to provide these services to this day – now known as Customer Engagement World.
Pertech Industries, Inc. has been a supplier of hardware solutions to the kiosk industry for over 20 years and will be exhibiting at the upcoming Customer Engagement World event in New York City on November 5th and 6th. Visit us at the show or on the web at www.pertechindustries.com.
